The old ‘chief cook and bottle washer’ sounds about right

rolodex-120.jpgIn the latest CW Mari-Len wrote a piece about some of the weird new job titles that are cropping up in the enterprise. Some of these, like chief risk officer, might be the kind of thing an IT manager will become, although it’s not always clear to me what’s a lateral move here and what’s really a promotion.

I haven’t picked up an issue in a while, but Fast Company magazine used to have a cool feature where they profiled people with unusual titles and tried to explain the backstory behind them. My favourite was “chief officer of vibe,” which belonged to someone who worked for a hotel chain, ensuring guests enjoyed the atmosphere at various locations.

A few years ago, of course, even titles like chief privacy officer were pretty rare, and I’m not always sure they’ll last. As for IT managers, until they manage to make networks run by themselves, I wouldn’t go changing your business cards just yet.
