The price is not right for Apple iPhone
The news out of San Francisco that Apple and Rogers will release the iPhone 3G in Canada on July 11th will be welcomed by the many Mac faithful who have been waiting for a long time to get their hands on this device.
The other bit of news from Apple is that they are slashing prices on the iPhone. While this is good news for consumers who always want to save a buck, I am puzzled why Apple is doing this. The iPhone was an expensive device, but people were willing to pay for it. Some people lined up for hours to drop hundreds on the product. Others drove for hours to the U.S. to purchase an iPhone and then unlock it.
I was in Taiwan recently and I heard similar stories from many Europeans who traveled to the U.S. and purchased an iPhone no matter what the cost. Read the rest of this entry »

Apple iPhone finally coming to Canada
One source from the financial services industry has informed me that Rogers has finally worked out a deal with Apple Canada and yes the much heralded iPhone will be made available to Canadians later on this year.
In typical Rogers and Apple Canada fashion there is no timeline announced and there are no more details about the launch.
The source added that Apple Canada believes this will have Research in Motion shaking in its boots. I found that comment to be ludicrous because, while I can accept that Apple Canada and its customers are excited about the iPhone coming to Canada, the braintrust at RIM are not the sort of people to panic.
Lets not forget that they dominate the market here in Canada and in the U.S. The iPhone has been in the U.S. over two calendar years and it has not be able to displace or come near the Blackberry’s sales performance. According to Gartner Research, the iPhone is at 19 per cent of the market in the U.S., while RIM is at 34 plus per cent. Even the “Other” category beats iPhone by two per cent. Apple’s iPhone is too late to Canadian market
A source tells me that a Taiwanese company, HTC Corp., has recently introduced a smartphone product called Touch to Canada that looks and works pretty much like an Apple iPhone.
This may spell doom for Apple’s iPhone in Canada, assuming the product ever gets here.
One might wonder how can a small phonemaker such as HTC can make a product so similar to the iPhone and yet receive absolutely no fanfare for its features. It’s a mystery to me.
While would any prospective iPhone customers and channel partners wait for Apple to get its act in gear for a working Canadian iPhone model when a smart vendor has already forged ahead? Read the rest of this entry »

Apple coming up for Air
Steve Jobs and the team at Apple are really pushing users to go wireless with its MacBook Air. This isn’t just a new product release for Apple. What they want to do here is start a movement. The company has gone as far as to say it’s a lifestyle change around wireless work.
I am not sure if the market is really ready to change to the wireless lifestyle. I am not even sure if there is such as thing as a wireless lifestyle.
For Apple’s channel dealers, I’m also not sure if they want to sell this to their customers. Customers want choice. They want options. Instead, Apple is telling the market the future is wireless and the future is now.
Apple displayed the MacBook Air and showed everyone how razor thin it is. For me, I saw a notebook without an optical drive. To me. this will force users to become wireless. Read the rest of this entry »

In search of the iPhone in Canada
It’s probably not surprising that Apple CEO Steve Jobs did not make an announcement at MacWorld about the iPhone finally being made available in Canada.
It is very puzzling that Apple has not released the iPhone in Canada. This country is one of biggest users of smart phones in the world. Canada has one of the highest rates of Internet adoption anywhere. To me it is just strange that Apple would not want to make one of its signiture products available here. This is nothing but a poor business decision if you ask me.
There has been plenty of anticipation about the iPhone’s arrival here for basically about a year. Click here to read more about that: iPhone watchers debate potential Canadian launch
One rumour suggests Steve Jobs himself will come to Canada to make the announcement sometime in early 2008. That would be shocking to me because I believe that Canada is an afterthought to most American-based companies. I know this is harsh and will be disputed by every vendor out there. This is just a feeling I have. Read the rest of this entry »
