Browsing inside the iphone

By Joaquim P. Menezes -

Browse iPhoneFans of HarperCollins’ Browse Inside say it’s quite different from a conventional e-book service.

Browse Inside allows consumers to digitally review the pages of books before making a purchase.

The New York Times describes it as “[replicating] in cyberspace the experience of going to a bookstore and flipping through a few pages before buying a book.”

I don’t quite agree.

In a store you can flip to any page or pages of the book that you want to check out.

Browse Inside, on the other hand, doesn’t show you all the content of a book, but usually just includes the Table of Contents, the first three pages of the first few chapters, and the front and back covers.

But for many that material would be more than adequate to get a sense of what the book is about - and the easy navigation buttons at the bottom of the Browse Inside window make browsing quite simple.

HarperCollins has now launched – surprise, surprise – its Browse Inside for the Apple iPhone.

Available for the iPhone are such scintillating titles as: Sweet Revenge by Diane Mott Davidson, Life On the Refrigerator Door by Alice Kuipers, and Love is a Many Trousered Thing by Louise Rennison.

I personally haven’t been a big fan of e-books – but for any proud iPhone owners (I know I’m not talking to Canadians) this may be worth checking out.

To experience the pilot, you need to fire up the Safari browser on your iphone and then go to http://iphone.libredigital.com
