Energy efficient IT: Green can be good business

Energy efficient IT is in.

Suddenly (finally?) it’s cool to take climate and energy seriously. And while it’s probably true that some vendors’ enthusiasm may be related to the marketing value of being seen to be green, they’re making real advances in energy efficient technology. So cynic or believer; whether you’re trying to save the planet or just trying to save your business money, the business case for greening your IT infrastructure can be compelling. Which is good news for ecology-conscious CIOs because it’s not always easy to get a business case approved where the benefits cited are, ” It’s good for the planet and future generations.”

Power and cooling have become key data centre issues. Market research firm IDC reports that for every dollar spent on hardware, another 25 cents is being spent on power and cooling, and it’s growing fast.

On August 28 in Toronto, I’ll be hosting a Frankly Speaking breakfast on energy efficient IT where we’ll explore issues such as data centre power and cooling, and strategies for reducing IT infrastructure energy costs. Request an invitation here. And some of the broader issues for IT are discussed in CIO Canada’s July, 2007 issue (see: How green is your data centre).
