The official ComputerWorld Canada Blogging Idol press release

We published this over Marketwire yesterday as part of the marketing campaign.

Be a BLOG IDOL with Computerworld CanadaCanada’s technology source looks for the next great tech blogger, with thousands in prizes on the line
TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire - April 21, 2008) - Computerworld Canada, the country’s leading magazine and online source of enterprise technology news and opinion, today announced BLOG IDOL, a talent contest to find the next great computer technology blogger.

“We know there are a lot of talented and insightful bloggers covering the technology market in Canada,” said Shane Schick, Computerworld Canada editor. “We want to give them a forum that exposes them to a wider readership base, and let that audience be the judge of whose content is most relevant, useful and entertaining to them.”

BLOG IDOL contestants will be given a theme to explore each week from May 19 to June 13, 2008. The winners will be determined by traffic generated, audience support and overall audience weblog ratings. Canada’s BLOG IDOL - the tech writer generating the most traffic - wins $1,000 cash. Other prizes include a Nikon CoolPix digital camera and gift certificates from Starbucks coffee.

“This blog-for-money BLOG IDOL contest is a great way for us to engage our readers and kick-start the dialogue about the issues that are important to information technology professionals today,” Schick said. “We’re thrilled to be offering the opportunity to let our readers shape that dialogue.”

Contestants can enter at www.blogidol.ca to enter the tech blog competition to win prizes. Registration opens April 15, 2008. The deadline for registration is May 2, 2008. Winners will be announced June 17, 2008.

Train for Blogging Idol by reading the top IT bloggers in Canada

As part of our contest kick-off I decided to compile a purely subjective list of the bloggers who are already out there and doing an amazing job. Read the 10 best technology bloggers in Canada to get an overview of their diverse backgrounds and sample posts from each blogger.

As a bonus, a local firm called Aide RSS has created a merged/filtered feed of the top 10 so you can stay connected to these bloggers on a regular basis. Enjoy.

Welcome to ComputerWorld Canada’s Blogging Idol

Starting May 19, ComputerWorld Canada will be holding a contest to determine the country’s next great technology blogger. Here’s how it will work:

    1. Contestants can register as a contestant on this site using the form on the right-hand side of the page. Once we’ve verified your information we will contact you with a unique user name and password to post to Blog Idol.

    2. Each week contestants will be given a new topic or theme to blog about. Contestants will be able to post as often and at whatever length they choose. Topics will be chosen by the editors of IT World Canada.

    3. We will ask judges to use the comments area to evaluate the quality of the posts based on the following criteria:
    -writing ability
    -IT industry expertise
    -level of Canadian content
-SEO ability to link to other blogs, add rich media and make use of tools such as Digg, etc.

    4. Readers will evaluate the posts using the blog engine’s rating feature, and once the contest is under way they will also be able to register as a fan of their favourite blogger. After four weeks, the blogger who has generated the most traffic will win $1,000 cash. The bloggers who has gotten the most fans to sign up will win the latest Nikon Coolpix digital camera. The blogger with the highest-rated posts (which have to be rated at least 10 times) will win a gift certificate to Chapters-Indigo.

We’re hoping Blog Idol will encourage members of the IT community who haven’t taken the plunge yet to give blogging a try, and to promote new voices in an ongoing conversation about improving the way technology is managed in Canadian companies. Best of luck to all who take part.
