Streets — and data centres — of San Fran go dark

darkened-keyboard.jpegA power outage that hit San Francisco last night has also underscored the vulnerability of IT equipment associated with some of the world’s largest companies.

According to O’Reilly Radar, which is tracking the situation, one of the casualities include a downtown data centre that hosts a number of Web 2.0 firms, including Craigslist and Technorati.

It’s been a bit embarassing for some of these firms, who were forced to admit their reputation for uptime was tarnished.

Canadians, of course, went through all this in August of 2003. That blackout was considered historic, but I sometimes wonder if people thought of it as a relatively isolated event. For all the talk of green technology, the real business driver towards power conservation may be the threat of blackouts bringing down business altogether. Just as security firms try to calculate the revenue impact of a hacker attack, expect backup and recovery firms to start doing the same thing.
