Surprise! Near-bankrupt SCO still has Canadian customers
I can’t imagine why anyone would feel a lot of sympathy for SCO, which may go down in high-tech history as one of the biggest patent trolls of all time. Its Chapter 11 filing, however, is a rare example of it acting as though it’s just another technology vendor.

Sun sidles into Windows market
You might wonder how Sun plans to gain any advantages for Solaris by announcing a partnership with Microsoft today whereby it will offer Windows Server on its x64 hardware and some utilities. It’s really an access play. Suddenly Sun has a better chance to get in front of Windows Server customers, which will help its hardware sales, but it also opens up a choice for those customers to switch teams more easily if they ever wanted to.
This would have been better timed to coincide with the launch of Windows Server 2008, but Sun could use the lift and probably didn’t want to count on Microsoft sticking to its release dates.

We’re dependent on the “Intermittantnet”
If you’re wondering why there was a decrease in activity on the blogs today, it’s because our network connection was down. And then up. And then down again. E-mail was affected, as was almost all our other business processes. We were told it was a service provider issue. Isn’t it always. I’ll tell you one thing: out of all the disgruntled users that IT managers have to deal with, I’m glad they don’t have to deal with our writers and editors. We get downright grumpy.

Relational databases are not all relative
There’s no better way to launch a new blog than to declare someone or something irrelevant, dead, or at least dying. Such is the success strategy of The Database column, which purports to be written “by the experts, for the experts.” I can’t say the experts at Oracle, IBM or any other expert employed by a database vendor are going to be pleased with one of the first postings, though.

Palm folds the Foleo
Yowsa! Now I feel like an idiot for running a detailed look at Palm’s handheld “companion” device, following a post on Palm CEO Ed Colligan’s blog that the device will not be launched as planned. He did make mention of a “next Foleo,” suggesting that the device will eventually see the light of day, but good luck getting much interest from buyers now.

Why it makes sense to wait for Vista SP1
A lot of silly speculation surrounding the release of the first service pack for Windows Vista was laid to rest last week after Microsoft announced that Vista SP1 will ship in Q1 of 2008 (along with Windows Server 2008).
I’m inclined to agree with those who claim that much of the initial confusion was caused by Redmond’s remarkable reticence (until last week) about Vista SP1.
As Paul Thurrott observes on his informative site, Microsoft was probably keen that its corporate customers “upgrade on the initial release and not wait for a service pack.”
